GENDER TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE
The endeavour at NEW LIFE CLUB is to address the root cause of gender inequality and work towards empowering of women and girls
In 2015-16, NEW LIFE CLUB sensitised and oriented communities on gender, through community level service providers, and other available platforms in the community. Project specific gender transformative change related milestones and appropriate tools for implementation were integrated into the detailed implementation plans of each project, and further monitored and evaluated based on gender specific indicators.
NEW LIFE CLUB generated a flagship document, ‘The Gender Transformative Change Approach’, to facilitate a comprehensive and common understanding around gender. NEW LIFE CLUB also generated a detailed list of Gender Transformative Change (GTC) indicators to measure the gender transformative change, based on the Strategic Impact Inquiry (SII) Framework of Women’s Empowerment. These indicators are available in the domains of health, livelihoods, and education and adapted to measure the progress of gender transformation in the projects.
INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE
Having identified inclusive governance as a cross-cutting strategy for empowering women and girls from the most marginalized communities to live in dignity and build secure and resilient lives, NEW LIFE CLUB focuses on creating a space for public authorities, duty bearers and citizens to have open conversations, leading to participatory planning and implementation of policies.
NEW LIFE CLUB seeks to promote inclusive governance by focusing on three domains, beginning with empowering marginalized citizens, particularly women and girls. Concerned with enabling the poor and marginalized to be aware of their rights and to have a stronger voice to demand change, this domain promotes community-based collective actions and encourages them to hold the authorities to account. The second domain entails working with a range of power holders, including the state, to improve their ability to fulfill their obligations and be more responsive, transparent, and accountable, especially to the impact groups. The third domain is the space where expanded, inclusive and effective negotiations are held between the previous two domains. Inclusive governance in NEW LIFE CLUB ’s projects is assessed based on the participation of citizens, accountability, and transparency of power-holders, strengthening of inclusive spaces and the improvement of services and outcomes.
Inclusive governance is a core element in many of NEW LIFE CLUB ’s projects, particularly those on livelihood, education and disaster management. NEW LIFE CLUB ’s community-level Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and School Management Committees (SMCs) are platforms that promote decision-making processes that are inclusive of every stakeholder.
BUILDING RESILIENCE
NEW LIFE CLUB focuses on building resilient livelihoods particularly by supporting communities to adapt and to be prepared for any emergencies that may threaten their livelihoods and well-being in the future. NEW LIFE CLUB ’s resilience framework integrates livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation approaches under a single assessment framework.
This includes enhancing employability, leadership skills, and capacities to take multiple ways of income to diversity risks, increasing awareness about public schemes and climate information and improving access to markets and information. Second, by building assets such as enabling women to own and manage community-based micro-financing of productive assets such as machinery, livestock and land, and rehabilitating degraded natural resources. Third, by collectivization where women are encouraged to practice group-based savings to finance their livelihood and demand land and forest rights. This is followed by developing participatory value chains, a method that helps enhance women’s capacities to take up new and non-traditional roles in agricultural and forestry value chains. The fifth approach is to engage with men and other influential actors to sensitize them on the role of women and the issues they face in practicing resilient livelihoods.
